As of June 22, 2008 the DCSA "NRA First Steps" handgun class as described at the very bottom of this page is being at least temporarily replaced with the "101" at Flower Mound Community Activity Center (CAC). Please contact the CAC at 972-874-PARK to register or Lonnie Ward at dcsa1996@yahoo.com if those classes or schedules do not work for you. Handgun Safety, Operation and Marksmanship 101 Tuesday, July 22 - 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 6 - 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. Sunday, August 17 - 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. Costs: $50 for classroom segment at the CAC. $81.88 for subsequently scheduled 90-minute/100 round shooting segment at DCSA. The objective of this course is for novice or inexperienced students to obtain the initial knowledge, skills and attitude to safely and responsibly own and operate a revolver or semi-automatic pistol. For students with aspirations to obtain the Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL), this "101" class can be taken at the before or after the CHL "Classroom Training" at the CAC. While the instructor will integrate unloaded handguns and snap caps (inert training rounds) and lasers as aids for "hands on" work in the classroom, students should not bring any personal firearms or ammunition to the CAC. Students will be welcome to bring their own handguns and ammunition to a subsequently scheduled session at Denton County Sports Association (DCSA) private indoor training facility (409 Copper Canyon Road; 7 miles northeast of the CAC). Eye and ear protection are included in the DCSA pricing above. The subsequent fee to DCSA of $81.88 per student includes eye and ear protection, initial membership and range use fee and an approximately 90-minute/100-round shooting session with instructor (and no more than one other student shooting at the same time). Students who, for whatever reason, desire to complete their 1 1/2 hour shooting session with no other student present will have opportunity to schedule same for an additional $60.00. "101 Class" students may bring their own handgun (of virtually any caliber) and (factory only) ammunition to the range session at DCSA only or will have the option of renting a 9mm Glock Model 19 or Kahr Model K-9 semi-automatic and purchasing ammunition at DCSA ($30 total including 100 rounds). If needed, 22 or 38 caliber revolvers and appropriate ammo can be made available. Based upon mutual student/instructor discretion at the time, there may be an option for the last 50 rounds of this session to include the DPS CHL course "Demonstration of Proficiency". Note: This Texas CHL "shooting qualification" requires a minimum of 32 caliber. Students who test with a revolver will be issued a license to carry only revolvers (of any caliber). Students who test with a semi-automatic will be issued a license good for either a semi-automatic pistol or a revolver. ---------------------------------------------- NRA FIRST STEPS PISTOL OR RIFLE ORIENTATION Please scroll balance of this page for details as well as "Required Reading" pages: FIRST Steps -- Firearm Instruction, Responsibility and Safety Training – is the National Rifle Association’s response to the American public’s need for a firearm orientation program for beginning shooters or new gun purchasers. It provides a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper operation of a specific model of firearm, whether one owned by the student or one supplied by the instructor. To not only improve retention, but also to make learning fun, these courses reflect the TPI (Total Participant Involvement) philosophy of "learning by doing". The format includes four distinct orientation lessons, each 45 to 60 minutes in length; Introductions to (1) Firearm Safety, Parts and Operations, (2) Ammunition and the Fundamentals of Marksmanship, (3) Firing the first shots from the bench rest position and (4) Cleaning, Storage and Training Opportunities
March 2008 Note: While this "First Steps" class is available on a private basis for those who do need the included NRA certificate (or for other reasons), market demand is such that it is rarely conducted on a scheduled basis. Particularly for those with a goal of obtaining the Texas CHL, possibly better alternatives are the "Home Study +P" or the new "Handguns 101" option (see links on left above). . The FIRST Steps orientation goal is to provide beginning* shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to own and use a specific model of rifle or pistol safely. Classes are limited to no more than four students, generally with each student using a different model or type of firearm. With this format, each student gets a fundamental understanding of their particular model, plus a general understanding of how other student’s guns operate. Ammunition (20 rounds), as well as eye and ear protection are provided.
Each student will receive a FIRST Steps Orientation Certificate and a copy of the NRA Basic Pistol or Rifle Course book to keep for future reference.
Prospective students are highly encouraged to attend a periodically scheduled "open house" or set up a private ($25) appointment to discuss the type of firearm one might choose to use in a FIRST Steps Orientation. * See "Hunter Education" page regarding special paperwork for anyone under 18 years old.
